Russell Square tube station has been shut as police evacuate a Waitrose supermarket while attempting to tackle a ‘bomb threat’ in central London.
People have been ordered to stay away from areas in Bloomsbury, including the busy Brunswick Centre.
A large police presence is in place, according to reports on social media, with images showing officers standing guard. TfL has confirmed that trains are not stopping at Russell Square. Firefighters have also been seen arriving.
Writer Anita Sethi is at the scene, and she posted on X: “Well done to the bomb squad, firemen, police & evacuation team working hard to keep everyone safe after a bomb scare here in #Bloomsbury London (horrifyingly close to where 7/7 bombs went off in Tavistock Square & Russell Square station – I happened to be in the area on that day).”
